Jonathan Leong honored
Jonathan Leong, one of the founders of the Asian American Donor Program, has been named the recipient of the Excellence 2000 Award, presented by the U.S. Pan Asian American Chamber of Commerce. The award recognizes outstanding Asian Americans from a variety of disciplines. Past winners include Kristi Yamaguchi, Tiger Woods, I.M. Pei and Yo-Yo Ma.

Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize Authors are encouraged to send five copies of published books to compete for the $15,000 prizes in both fiction and nonfiction categories. They promote books that contribute to a greater understanding among the people and nations in the Pacific Rim region. The deadline for entries is July 1. Miss Asian America Queen Search
The Miss Asian America Pageant is accepting applications for the Aug. 15 event. Twenty contestants will be selected from applicants who are between 17 and 25, single and have never had a child, at least 25 percent Asian and a U.S. resident. For more information, call 415-474-8398.)

Rizal’s Enduring Vision at the Dawn of the New Millennium The Pinole Library celebrates the 138th birthday of Jose Rizal with readings of his work, Filipino music and dance. Participants are encouraged to wear Filipino costumes. The event will be held June 19, 6:30 p.m., at the Pinole Library, 2935 Pinole Valley Road, Pinole. For more information, call 510-222-3890.

USF establishes Philippines Studies Program The University of San Francisco received a $500,000 gift from Philippine Ambassador Alfonso Yuchengco to create a Philippine Studies program at the university. The program is the first of its kind among the 28 Jesuit colleges in the United States. The program is to be named after the ambassador’s late daughter, Maria Elena Yuchengco, a 1986 USF graduate.

Voting Workshops The Alameda County Registrar of Voters will arrange for bilingual staff to hold voting classes and workshops for Alameda County organizations. The registrar has Chinese and Spanish speakers, and can arrange Vietnamese assistance. Class material includes absentee voting information, how to register to voter and an introduction to ballots, propositions and candidates. Adopting from China
Bay Area Adoption Services will hold an adoption seminar Saturday, 3 p.m.-4:30 p.m. The seminar features guest speaker Xiaoqing Cai, who has helped more than 250 Chinese orphans find homes in the Bay Area. For more information, call 415-499-8037.

Computer Classes Free after-school computer classes for low-income children in the Tenderloin, Mission, Chinatown and Western Addition are available through the Career Resources Development Center in San Francisco. For more information, call 415-775-8880.

Language Discrimination Assistance The Language Rights Project offers free legal assistance for people who have experienced discrimination in the workplace based on their language or accent, or have been unable to obtain access or services from public agencies because of their language. Workshops are held in Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Spanish. For more information, call 800-864-1664.

Legal Advice and Referral Volunteer attorneys are available to provide free legal advice and referral to elderly and low- and moderate-income Asian Americans. Chinese translation is available 6 p.m.-7 p.m. Tuesdays at the Asian Law Caucus, 720 Market St., Fifth Floor, San Francisco. In collaboration with Chinese for Affirmative Action, the caucus holds clinics for seniors, regardless of ethnicity, in Visitacion Valley the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the CAA office, 333 Schwerin St., Second Floor, San Francisco. Getty Visual Arts Internships
The Getty Grant Program has awarded $530,000 to 78 museums and visual arts organizations to provide paid 10-week summer internships to 156 college students interested in pursuing careers in the visual arts. Institutions participating include the Japanese American National Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art and Inner City Arts. Interns will receive $3,000 stipends, and must be currently enrolled undergraduates who live in the Los Angeles area. Applicants should apply directly to the organizations of their choice. HIV/AIDS Oral Testing The Asian Youth Center provides free HIV/AIDS oral testing and counseling every other Thursday from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at 100 W. Clary Ave. in San Gabriel. For information, call 626-309-0622 for more information.
