Asian American Screenwriting Contest
Asian American Media Development and Yolk Magazine are seeking entries to its screenwriting contest through Oct. 29. Screenplays must be original, non-optioned, non-produced and registered with the WGA or copyrighted with the Library of Congress. Applicants must be U.S. citizens. Fil-Am Films and Video Sought The Filipino American CineArts is calling for entries to Screening Filipino, the organization’s cinema festival and competition, to be held Oct. 13-14 at the San Francisco Main Library. Chinese Community Health Care Association Grants
CCHCA is accepting applications for its annual grants, provided as a resource to encourage and support new and innovative health programs that benefit local Asian American communities. Deadline is Sept. 30 and grants will be awarded in December. For proposal guidelines or an application, call Queenly Lui at 415-397-3190 Ext. 212.

Voting Workshops The Alameda County Registrar of Voters will arrange for bilingual staff to hold voting classes and workshops for Alameda County organizations. The registrar has Chinese and Spanish speakers, and can arrange Vietnamese assistance. Class material includes absentee voting information, how to register to vote and an introduction to ballots, propositions and candidates. API Rape Trauma Services
Bilingual volunteers are needed as hotline counselors. Training session starts Sept. 21. For more information, call Thea Lee Woon at 650-652-0598.

Translation Volunteers The Asian and Pacific Islander Wellness Center is looking for volunteers to translate and proofread documents. For more information, call Bryan Pangilinan at 415-292-3420, Ext. 360.

Computer Classes
Free after-school computer classes for low-income children in the Tenderloin, Mission, Chinatown and Western Addition are available through the Career Resources Development Center in San Francisco. For more information, call 415-775-8880.

English Classes The Chinatown YMCA offers free morning English classes with bilingual counselors to help Cantonese speakers with limited English skills. Enrollment is open. Call 415-928-4419 for more information.

Language Discrimination Assistance The Language Rights Project offers free legal assistance for people who have experienced discrimination in the workplace based on their language or accent, or have been unable to obtain access or services from public agencies because of their language. Advice is given in Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Spanish. For more information, call 800-864-1664.

Legal Advice and Referral Volunteer attorneys are available to provide free legal advice and referral to elderly and low- and moderate-income Asian Americans. Chinese translation is available 6 p.m.-7 p.m. Tuesdays at the Asian Law Caucus, 720 Market St., Fifth Floor, San Francisco. In collaboration with Chinese for Affirmative Action, the caucus holds clinics for seniors, regardless of ethnicity, in Visitacion Valley the first and third Wednesdays of each month at the CAA office, 333 Schwerin St., Second Floor, San Francisco.
