Moving Forward

Here at AsianWeek, our hopes, cheers and enthusiasm of entering a new century and millennium are slightly tempered with the departure of our editor, Margaret Suh, who will be leaving to pursue other career interests. During her tenure at AsianWeek, we appreciated her dedication and tenacity toward her craft and constant efforts to improve upon AsianWeek’s twenty-year status as the voice of Asian America. Whether it was covering Siripongs’ execution, the persecution of Wen Ho Lee or “Donorgate,” Margaret brought to the newspaper journalistic energy and intensity that will remain long after she leaves.

We wish her the very best in her new endeavors. She should be secure in the knowledge that AsianWeek became that much more effective under her watch.

A Time to Remember

On the eve of a new century, Asian Week would like to wish its readers a most peaceful and joyous holiday season. It is an important time for Asian Americans to reflect on not only our personal lives, but to also contemplate our contributions and place in American society. The past 100 years have been the defining century for our community. The successes were and continue to be many. Whatever the field or industry, whether it be Olympic competition, business, politics, entertainment or education, Asian Americans have made an indelible mark on American society and have been an integral part of America’s greatness.

Yet reflecting back on the last 100 years, there are also constant reminders of the intolerance certain segments of American society harbor and continue to harbor against our community. The Chinese Exclusion Act, the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, the miscarriage of justice of Vincent Chin and the recent so-called Asian fund-raising scandal, are shameful examples of how far we as Americans, still have to go to achieve true equality and equal partnership.

As we enter the 21st century, we must remember that despite gains, the journey for social justice and the right to share in opportunities afforded all Americans will continue to be difficult. It is our responsibility and obligation to past and future generations of Asian Americans, as well as to this nation, that the barriers of discrimination and intolerance continue to be torn down.
