LABOR OF LOVE: The Miss Gay Globe 2000 Pageant was sponsored by the Filipino Task Force on AIDS (FTFA), the only Filipino-specific AIDS organization in the country (www.FTFA.org).
“This first Miss Globe beauty pageant was truly a labor of love on my part as well as the rest of the FTFA board and staff….I have been involved in other pageants before (Mr. and Miss GAPA, Miss Gay Universe, Queen of the World, Model Search) but none of them are as exhausting and as satisfying as putting Miss Globe together,” stated Darwin Dayan, FTFA chairperson and pageant producer. Miss Globe 2000 was intended to be an outreach campaign as well as a fund-raiser for FTFA. From inception to final end product, it took three months to produce this classy pageant, modeled after the Miss Universe Pageant with contestants competing in four categories: National Costume, Evening Gown, Swimsuit and Formal Interview.
As promised, there was plenty of high glamour, high humor and most important—high hair! Leading the charge was Victoria La Voovah, Mistress of Ceremonies, a veteran host and performer, who kept the audience entertained with her grace, charm and beautiful, bargain-basement evening gowns and accessories.
FELICIDADES!: Congratulations to Miss Gay Globe 2000 Anna Sanchez who represented the country of Mexico. Born and raised in the Philippines, Sanchez faced stiff competition from Miss Philippines, Miss Thailand and the 10 other contestants vying for the coveted crown. “I’m just so thrilled, excited, delighted and ecstatic to be the first Miss Globe! Just being a part of the pageant and most especially benefiting FTFA truly makes me proud of this rewarding experience,” responded Sanchez. Sanchez thanked her family for their support and acceptance.
A PIONEER AND SUPER FILIPINA!: A veteran journalist in both print and broadcast media with her roots firmly planted in the Filipino community, Margaret Lacson has been able to use her high profile and visibility to the AIDS cause as the new executive director of FTFA. When not officiating over FTFA business, Lacson can be found at the KMTP 32 headquarters in San Francisco functioning in her dual roles: Since January of this year, Lacson has taken on the responsibility as the news producer and managing editor of Newsnight, the first local Bay Area African American news broadcast, while continuing the role she started in 1997 as the executive producer, managing editor and anchor for the Filipino-American Report (KMTP TV32). Lacson has been widely recognized for her work as a writer and producer of award-winning public service announcements for the American Cancer Society, Seton Medical Center and Santa Clara County Breast Cancer Prevention Program and has produced health segments on diabetes, heart disease prevention, foot care, cancer and HIV and AIDS. Lacson completed her masters in communications and public affairs at the American University in Washington and her bachelor of arts degree in political science at Fordham University in New York.
