Ship Named for Chinese American WWII Hero

October 19, 2000

HONOLULU—The Navy said it will name a new guided-missile destroyer after a Chinese American admiral from World War II.

The USS Chung Hoon will be named for the late Rear Adm. Gordon Chung Hoon, who earned the Navy Cross and the Silver Star while commanding the USS Sigsbee destroyer during World War II.

In the spring of 1945, the Sigsbee destroyed 20 Japanese fighters while screening a carrier task force off Kyushu Island in Japan.

On April 14, 1945, the ship was heavily damaged in a kamikaze attack off Okinawa but continued fighting with its anti-aircraft batteries and made port.

Chung Hoon, who died in 1979, attended school in Honolulu and graduated from the Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1934.

The 466-foot USS Chung Hoon will be the 43rd ship in the Arleigh Burke class of destroyers. It will be equipped with surface-to-air missiles and Tomahawk cruise missiles, SH-60 helicopters and armed with torpedoes and a 5-inch gun, the Navy said.
