A Death Unsettled

A family searches for clues in the hanging death of a fraternity member

Early Monday morning on June 5, Peter Dung Nguyen woke from his sleep and trudged from his bed like so many other reluctant students during finals week. He dressed and left his freshman “porch,” a room he shared with other housemates at the Zeta Psi fraternity house at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle. The 19-year-old sophomore was headed toward campus to take an 8:30 a.m. final exam for a business law class.

The day before, Nguyen had attended church with his parents, who live in Federal Way, Wash., less than an hour away from the university. Later that night he did some studying for the final he was to take the next day. Before he slept he talked with his girlfriend, Lisa Ly, a San Jose resident and a student at U.C. Irvine. They talked about his tests, his goals, they joked around and then wished each other a good night.

Nguyen finished his final the next morning and he headed back to his fraternity house between the hours of 10:30 and 11 a.m. At least one fraternity member saw him, and asked him to lunch. But Nguyen declined, saying that he was too tired from studying the night before. That was the last time anyone ever saw Nguyen alive.
