Solidarity in Action

Profiles of five Asian Americans who are building coalitions with the black community

In recognition of Black History Month, AsianWeek presents profiles of five Asian Americans — Bill Lann Lee, Butch Wing, Nobuko Miyamoto, Frank Wu and Akiyu Hatano — all of whom have strengthened coalitions with the black community, proving that the racial divide can be a fine line.

In the following stories, Lee describes working with clients from the South in the 1970s, who reminded him of his own parents; Wing recalls campaigning for Jesse Jackson in Chinatown, hearing senior residents chant, “Go Jesse, go”; Miyamoto talks about the lessons she learned while working with the Black Panthers; Hatano reveals her passion for empowering African American youth at the charter school she helped found; and Wu shares his experiences as a person of color growing up in a Michigan suburb.
