When Indonesia’s President Abdurrahman Wahid took office in October 1999, he faced the formidable tasks of trying to establish democracy, curtail rampant corruption, revive the economy — and quiet the separatist violence that has been tearing the country’s ethnic fabric. Nearly 18 months later, Wahid has had little success and is struggling to survive politically, as public confidence in him dwindles.

Answering to that call, Darren Kim invented the Flylight, a portable lamp that can light a computer keyboard during meetings, long commutes or in any dark environment. The Korean-born American immigrated to the United States when he was 9. Since then, Kim has used his educational background and work experience to shatter the glass ceiling in the business/technological realm.
