Girl Strikes Back in School Attack

Shooting suspect’s lawyer says she defends underdogs

By Joseph Hong

The eighth-grade girl who shot and wounded her female classmate in a small Catholic school last week had recently defended an Asian American classmate from racial harassment and bullying by other students, her lawyer said.

Census Shows Leap in Asian Population

By Genaro C. Armas/AP

America’s Asian American population is soaring, government figures show, in large part because of an influx of immigrants seeking better lives. The statistics also indicate that most Asians prefer urban rather than rural settings.
