Emil Amok: The Race Conversation Changes

In the immortal words of James Brown, the ’60s self-proclaimed “Godfather of Soul,” “Say it loud, I’m (blank) and I’m proud”

Blank? These days it’s hard to say.

The national conversation on race is about to change, dramatically so. Between the multi-race and the uni-race among us, when it comes to identity, even the Census Bureau threw its hands in the air this year and said quite frankly, “What do you want to call yourself?”

For years, I’ve eschewed Filipino American, or the more census-correct Asian Pacific Islander, for my own term: “As-panic.”

We’re here. And we’re all human! For some time, we’ve been gearing up for the census. In 1999, outreach efforts began to encourage participation, especially in low-income, urban and minority communities, where under-counting is common compared to middle-class suburbs. Last year, census billboards could be seen throughout the Mission in San Francisco, and speakers of Russian, Spanish and Chinese were recruited to take the census door to door. And we all got our forms in the mail.
