U.C. Berkeley Releases Data on 2001 Student Admissions

By Bay City News

The University of California at Berkeley announced on Tuesday it has opened its doors to more than 8,700 students this year, showing an across-the-board increase in admissions for every ethnic group. Perhaps the most dramatic increase for an ethnic group went to Latino students, 1,013 of whom were admitted this year — up 137, or 15.6 percent, from last year, according to the university’s data.

By comparison, 3,336 Asian Americans were admitted this year, up 3.4 percent from last year; and 2,872 whites were accepted, up 3.8 percent from last year.

A total of 56 American Indians and 313 African Americans were given the OK for fall 2001, representing increases of 30.2 percent and 4 percent, respectively.

School officials said admissions are “the culmination of an intensive three-month review of student applications.”

The numbers released today are preliminary, as graduating high school seniors still have until May 1 to accept or decline enrollment. The numbers are also incomplete because about one out of 10 enrollees did not provide information on race.
