The Growing Up Asian in America Contest announces another year of talented winners
In 1995, the Asian Pacific Fund created Growing Up Asian in America, a contest that serves as a forum to understand the experiences of local Asian American youth. It is a unique opportunity to get a peek at how young Asian Pacific Americans think and feel about their emerging identities. On the following pages are some of the winners from this years contest, which had the theme of My Favorite Thing.
Growing Up Asian in America awards $27,000 in savings bonds annually to student winners chosen from a pool of 1,500 entries on average. The program is launched every year in January with an essay and art contest for K-12th grade students in nine Bay Area counties. In May, the educational program continues with nine community exhibits of winning entries that are hosted by public libraries and viewed by over 1 million Bay Area residents.
The Asian Pacific Fund is a Bay Area foundation that finds new resources to address the needs of the regions diverse Asian American population. The Fund provides information and services that help individual donors achieve a greater impact with their charitable gifts. Needs in the Asian community are often hidden; the Fund helps to identify and bring these issues to public attention.
