Bay to Breakers, Over and Out

70,000 turn out for the San Francisco celebration

By Ethen Lieser, Photos by Anna Moller

It has to be fun when you see a 6-foot hamster complete with a wheel that’s big enough to double as a semi-truck tire. Or maybe it was the red-faced, puke-headed, foul-smelling drunkards that tapped the kegs at 8 a.m. Maybe not, unless you were one of them. But who could have asked for more? A baby was born at 5:15 a.m. in a car near Golden Gate Park. Forlorn dot-commers wore pink — sob, sob, sob. And the mad-cow and rolling blackout costumes were like a Mike Tyson-punch to the nose. That is, unless you’re a “Breaker Veteran.” Oh, and one more thing: Congratulations to the two speed demons from Kenya, James Koskei (34 minutes, 19 sec.) and Jane Ngotho (40 monites, 35 sec.), who didn’t participate in the more hedonistic aspects of this San Francisco tradition. You two are the champs!
