Stockton Man Shot at Drag Race

By Associated Press

Stockton — San Joaquin County sheriff’s deputies said a 19-year-old Stockton man who was shot at a drag race May 27 is on life support. Chome Kouiyoth was participating in an illegal drag race just before 2 p.m., when someone walked up and shot him in the head as he sat behind the wheel, according to spokesman Joe Herrera. More than 100 cars were at the scene of Jackton Road and state Highway 4, blocking traffic.

The weapon used appears to have been a semiautomatic handgun.

The victim is known as a gang member, the sheriff’s spokesman said, adding that it is not yet clear whether this shooting is related to other recent shootings in the city.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Deborah Schuffel at 209-468-4400.
