Come Out of the Shadows

Casting Call: Are you athletic, highly intelligent, a good problem solver and a good team player? If you answered “yes” to all, then you may be in line for a “life altering cash prize” as one of the winners of Rivals, a new reality/game show for ABC. Producer/director Jude Weng and her crew will be coming to San Francisco to look for contestants (8 people total) on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (open call) at Planet Hollywood in Union Square. She advises contestants to fill out the 40-page application before hand (applications can be found at ABC.com (key word: Rivals) and promises contestants “an international adventure of a lifetime!” No stranger to adventure and creating hit shows, Weng was in the jungles of Borneo as head writer for Survivors (ABC) and was also a writer and producer for Boot Camp (Fox). A Mission High School alum, Weng has fond memories of growing up in her father’s restaurant in the Castro District and is looking forward to coming back to the Bay Area. Upon graduation, Weng attended the American Film Institute on a grant and went on to direct for music videos, documentaries and for the Travel Channel. “I’d like to see more Asian Americans and other minorities get cast for these high profile, prime time network shows … so please come out and show us your stuff,” urges Weng.

Got Film? Please Submit! 2002 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the SF International Asian American Film Festival (March 7-17, 2002), the nation’s premier event dedicated to exhibiting APIA films and videos. Each year, the festival plays host to over 100 filmmakers, programmers and industry guests, attracts over 15,000 people and screens 100 films and videos during its ten-day run. The festival is calling all filmmakers and videomakers to submit their works — all genres and lengths welcomed. Early deadline is Sept. 14 with a late deadline of Oct. 12. For complete guidelines and entry form, please visit www.naatanet.org/festival or write to festival@naatanet.org. Also check out www.naatanet.org for other filmmaker opportunities, funding sources and jobs.

Renaissance Man: In conjunction with last month’s Asian American International Film Festival in New York, editor/writer Roger Garcia, released his new book titled, Out of the Shadows: Asians in American Cinema, a 300 page collection of essays, interviews with 30 actors (including James Shigeta and Jackie Chan), directors (including Wayne Wang and John Woo), documentarians and producers (including Terence Chang and Chris Lee). The book also includes a dictionary of 190 Asian Pacific Islander American filmmakers, actors, personalities and a chronology of APIA history and films.
