Children’s Services Fund As a collaborative between Wu Yee Children’s Services, Whitney Young Child Development Center and Children’s Council of San Francisco, the San Francisco Vendor Voucher Program assists San Francisco low-to-moderate income families in paying for licensed childcare for children 0 - 13 years old. It is designed to serve single-parent families who are working or have been offered employment, and two-parent families, of which either parent is working and offered employment and the other parent is working or enrolled in school or job training. Through the program, parents will be free to choose any licensed childcare provider, as well as receive child care counseling. Computer Classes Free after-school computer classes for low-income children in the Tenderloin, Mission, Chinatown and Western Addition are available through the Career Resources Development Center in San Francisco. For more information, call 415-775-8880.

Paid Research Subjects Needed Project CHAMPS invites you to participate in a research study. All participants will receive up to $30. Researchers at the University of California, San Francisco are conducting a study to examine how culture, health and mood may influence smoking habits. The information will help investigators design more effective smoking cessation programs to serve the community. Participation will involve completing questionnaires, an interview, and providing breath and saliva samples. Study procedures can be completed at the time and location that is convenient for you. You must be over 18 years old and have smoked at least 5 cigarettes in the past seven days in order to participate. The questionnaires and interviews are available in both Chinese and English. Sansei Live Kimochi, Inc. is holding its 18th annual fundraising event, which celebrates the senior services organization’s 30th anniversary. Featured performers include jazz artist Michael Paulo, the Kimochi All-Stars and deejay John Jow of Pure Energy/KMEL. The Crissy Field Center Experience the exciting blend of programs at the Crissy Field Center, located in the Presidio. Free Counseling for Seniors Do you or someone you care for need support with a difficult life transition? Get help from one who’s been there. Senior Peer Counseling trains volunteers over 55 to assist fellow seniors through emotional support, problem solving and compassionate listening. All services are voluntary and free of charge. Free Legal Clinic Legal consultation for seniors is available for general legal rights, immigration and naturalization, housing and eviction, and public benefits. Services provided by staff from the Asian Law Caucus the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, at Self-Help for the Elderly. No appointments are made. Life After Placement Family Caregiver Alliance offers a new, free, monthly drop-in support group for families and friends dealing with the stress of placing a loved one in a nursing home or other care facilities. The group is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., every third Thursday of each month, beginning Aug. 16, at the Family Caregiver Alliance, 690 Market St., Suite 600, San Francisco. Attendance is free. San Francisco College Access Center The SFCAC is a Cal-SOAP project that provides free college advisement targeting low-income, first-generation college students and parents. SFCAC is located on the 3rd floor of the San Francisco Main Library. San Mateo Pre-school Programs The San Mateo County Head Start, Early Head Start and State Pre-school programs offer free, comprehensive child and family development services for low-income pregnant women and parents with children ages 0 - 5, including children with special needs. A Chef’s Delight Food and Wine Tasting Festival Calling all gourmands and wine lovers. On Sunday, Oct.14, 3 - 6 p.m., join KCBS Food and Wine Editor Narsai David and celebrity chefs Julie Tan, Roy Salazar, Loan Co, and Jack Greenspan at the landmark Oakland Rotunda, 300 Frank H. Facing Forward Facing Forward: Creating Disability Pride in Our API Community is an event sponsored by the Asian & Pacific Islanders with Disabilities of California to provide information and resources to Asian & Pacific Islanders with disabilities and their families to empower themselves to enter mainstream society and become self sufficient and lead independent lives; to build a coalition of Asian & Pacific Islanders service providers and consumers to advocate for the removal of barriers specific to our cultural communities. Generations Fashion show Organized by the Susie Lum family, this fundraiser benefits On Lok Senior Health Services and its intergenerational program, which brings together preschool children and the elderly. Imaging the Enemy Pusod presents imaging the Enemy: Media during War, a forum with Janette Faulkner on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at Pusod Center for Culture, Ecology and Bayan, 1808 Fifth St., Berkeley. Solar Yes The Greenpeace Clean Energy Now campaign is launching Solar Yes in San Francisco. On Nov. 6, San Franciscans will have the amazing opportunity to vote for two propositions, B and H, which will double the current national output of solar energy. This is vital to prevent another energy crisis in California and to stop global warming, the most serious environmental threat facing us all. These projects will both pay for themselves without raising taxes. Greenpeace Clean Energy Now is also supporting Propositions I and F, because not-for-profit public power is more responsive to consumer needs and environmental concerns. Acupuncturist, Haight/Ashbury Free Medical Clinic Are you a licensed acupuncturist? You can help members of diverse communities during all stages of HIV treatment. Provide acupuncture and Chinese herbal treatment on a weekly basis and help maintain the acupuncture clinic. Contact Scott Wallin at 415-487-5638 x123.

Asian Women’s Shelter Opportunities exist to provide emotional and practical support for residents. Volunteers can assist clients with basic needs, accompany residents to appointments and organize activities for children. Bilingual and bi-cultural skills are helpful. Asians over age 55 needed Connect with your community and join a team of older adults serving children in San Francisco to help out in classrooms, provide homework assistance, read one-on-one, supervise recreational activities, or run after-school programs. Make a difference by giving children in our neighborhoods caring Asian adult role models. A monthly tax-free stipend of $150 is available for volunteers who serve 15 hours per week. Child Advocacy The San Francisco Court Appointed Special Advocate Program (SFCASA) seeks community volunteers to advocate for abused and neglected children. Represent a child’s best interests in Juvenile Dependency Court and develop a supportive mentoring relationship. Men and people of color are especially needed. Chinatown YMCA Lightwaves Mentorship Program is looking for adult volunteers to commit for 10 months. A mentor spends one-on-one time with a middle school student weekly, and participates in group activities monthly. A coordinator will provide training. Chinatown YWCA The organization is looking for volunteers to tutor children in its after-school program Monday through Friday. Volunteers are especially needed to facilitate an English conversational hour for immigrant elementary school-age children. A 3-4 hour per week commitment is required. National HIV/AIDS Hotline Project Inform is recruiting volunteers for its National HIV/AIDS Treatment Hotline training. The training will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 5:15 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hotline operators are required to commit to one 3-hour shift per week for a minimum of six weeks. Special Children Need Special Advocates The San Francisco Unified School District is actively recruiting volunteers to make a difference in the education of special needs children. Individuals needed to serve as a child’s surrogate parent for educational rights; to help children when parents cannot be located or when juvenile court has specifically limited the right of a parent or guardian to make educational decisions; to represent exceptional needs children in identification, assessment, instructional placement, reviewing and revising individual education programs; and in other matters relating to a free, appropriate education. St. Anthony Foundation Have you wondered what you could do to make a difference in the lives of people who are poor or homeless? St. Anthony Foundation needs volunteers for 12 homeless service programs, including people to serve lunch in the free dining room. St. Anthony’s serves 2,000 meals a day, 365 days a year. Survivors International The group seeks a volunteer activity guide for two or more hours a week to help refugees master English and become familiar with parks, museums, banks, post offices, public transportation and free cultural activities in the Bay Area. Chinese Folk and Lion Dance Chung Ngai Dance Troupe offers classes in Chinese folk and classical dancing, lion dancing and martial arts. Established in 1966, Chung Ngai is a non-profit organization whose mission is to promote Chinese culture through the performing arts in the Bay Area and beyond. Composting Workshops The Alameda County Waste Management Authority offers free home composting workshops - basic and worm. Composting is nature’s way of recycling your fruit, vegetable, and yard trimmings into a rich soil amendment. Workshops are outside, rain or shine, unless otherwise noted. Free Naturalization Workshop The Asian Law Caucus conducts free naturalization workshops to assist individuals who want to assess their eligibility for naturalization, and who are eligible and want to submit a citizenship application. Cantonese and Mandarin language assistance is available. These workshops are held on the first and third Saturday morning of each month until the end of 2001. Free Traditional Chinese Music Lessons The Chinese Culture Center is pleased to announce the commencement of ongoing workshops and lessons in traditional Chinese music, taught by acclaimed multi-instrumentalist Hong Wang, the artistic director of Melody of China, Inc. Beginning and intermediate classes will be held on Sunday from 10 a.m. to noon. ThangLong Learning Center The ThangLong Learning Center offers help to students to strive for better grades, and master mathematics. Writing for Performance Class Kearny Street Workshop’s Creative Writing Program presents: Writing for Performance Class with Charlie Chin on Mondays (Oct. 1 through Nov. 19), 7 to 9:30 p.m. Writer, playwright, and veteran performer Chin will lead the members of this eight-session workshop through vocal, body movement, and dynamic writing exercises. He will teach them how to write and perform their own Solo Theater piece. Drawing on over 25 years of experience, he will reveal the secrets and tricks used by professional writers and performers to create good theater. Previous experience is not necessary, but all students must make a commitment to learn. Classes are held at SomArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan St.(@ 9th. St.), San Francisco.
