Emil Amok by Emil Guillermo

The New Style of Internment

Asian Pacific Islander Americans know internment camps. That’s why when Muslims, Arabs and South Asians were being murdered, harassed and unfairly targeted for the Sept. 11th attacks, many of us began to think the unthinkable.

After all, the Supreme Court precedent that would allow the incarceration based on race for national security reasons still stands.

But certainly, the political climate in the days of the post-WTC attack could not get that bad, could it? Internment camps are just a bad memory from the past, right?

Christian Extremists: Our Very Own Taliban At Home

By Surina Khan

Just two days after the horrific attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, I was speaking to a reporter from the Advocate, a national gay and lesbian newsmagazine. He wanted to know if I had any thoughts about what angle he should take in covering the recent attacks. I suggested he focus less on who was responsible and more on the emerging nationalism in the United States. Nationalism is a sense of national consciousness that elevates one nation above all others and places primary importance on promoting its culture (i.e. white, heterosexual and European in the United States) as opposed to other cultures or nations.
