Applications for Japantown Street Fair The Nihonmachi Street Fair will celebrate its 29th year this Aug. 10 and 11, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. in San Francisco’s Japantown on Post and Buchanan streets. APA organizations are encouraged to sponsor food booths, and arts and crafts booths to raise funds for programs and services. Chinatown Night Market Fair Chinatown Neighborhood Inc. presents Chinatown Night Market Fair at Chinatown’s Portsmouth Square every Saturday, 6 p.m. - 11 p.m. until Nov. 9. The evening program will include traditional lion dancing, Chinese opera, musical performances, Chinese painting, fortunetellers and feng shui consultants. Participating merchants will validate up to two hours of parking 5 p.m. - 2 a.m., at Portsmouth Square Garage and 6 p.m. - 2 a.m. at St. Mary’s Garage with minimum purchase. EastLake Unity Festival The third annual EastLake Unity Festival will be held Sunday, July 21, at Clinton Park at International Boulevard (between Sixth and Seventh avenues). The celebration will include music and dance performances, food booths featuring neighborhood ethnic restaurants, children’s activities, local arts and crafts, and historical exhibits. Gut Gang Camp The Greater Bay Area Chapter of the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America will host their second annual Gut Gang Camp for kids with inflammatory bowel disease Aug. 18 - 21 at Camp Arroyo in Livermore. The camp provides children and teens with opportunities to meet and interact with others with IBD, to develop a stronger sense of self-esteem through participating in a wide range of programs and to learn how to better manage their disease. Gardening Events at Strybing Strybing Arboretum Society presents two special garden events for families to enjoy this summer. Share your love of plants with your kids on July 22 and Aug. 9 at the Bean Sprouts Family Garden Day. Classes are offered for children ages 3 - 5, accompanied by an adult, 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Fee: $5 per child per class. For more info: 415-661-1316 x307. On Aug. 3, the Gardening Fair will offer activities, demonstrations, plants to buy and guided family walks to explore the gardens. Veterans 50th Anniversary The Golden Gate Nissei Memorial Post 9879 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars is celebrating its 50th anniversary July 27, 6 p.m. - 7 p.m. at the Radisson Miyako Hotel in Japantown, San Francisco. The emcee will be Ken Kashiwahara, Eric Saul will be the keynote speaker, and George Yoshida’s Combo will provide entertainment with music and songs from the 1950s. Tickets: $60. Child Abuse Prevention Center Are you interested in making a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children of all ages in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties? The Child Abuse Prevention Center offers you an opportunity to join its Case Aide Program, which assists children and their families. Free Counseling for Seniors Seniors often face isolation, loss, depression, illness and other challenges in their day-to-day lives. Senior Peer Counseling trains volunteers over 55 to assist fellow seniors through emotional support, problem solving and compassionate listening. All services are voluntary and free of charge. Hospice by the Bay Hospice by the Bay, located in San Francisco, is looking for volunteers to provide assistance with non-medical activities and companionship, office and thrift store, and fundraising volunteers. Previous experience in hospice care is not necessary; training is provided. Hospice by the Bay encourages those from diverse backgrounds and a fluency in multiple languages to apply.
