Floss Talk by Tenile Wong

Texas Rangers closer Hideki Irabu was released from a Kansas City hospital on July 20 after being hospitalized since July 15 with small blood clots in his arteries and lungs. For the next six to eight weeks, Irabu will probably be on blood-thinning medication, which will likely end his season. He is currently on the 15-day disabled list. In his first season as a full-time closer, Irabu registered 16 saves in 20 opportunities and had a 3-8 record with a 5.74 ERA. … Tiger Woods’ run for the Grand Slam spiraled to a crash in the third round of the British Open. Woods was in contention for the first two rounds but shot an 81 in the third round — his worst score on the pro tour. Woods regained enough composure to shoot a 65 in the final round to finish even par, six shots behind tournament champion Ernie ElsWang Zhizhi is playing for the Golden State Warriors summer pro league team because of the Mavericks’ commitment to the Chinese government. When Zhizhi, who averaged 5.6 points and two rebounds for Dallas last season, was drafted two years ago, the Mavericks agreed to make him available whenever the Chinese government asked. This means that in the off-season, Dallas can’t place him on its summer league roster. The 7-foot-1 Zhizhi has reportedly ignored the letters from the Chinese government demanding his return … The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms with offensive lineman Ed Ta’amu, a 2002 fourth-round draft choice. Ta’amu, a two-year starter out of University of Utah, was a two-time All-Mountain West Conference selection. In his senior season, Ta’amu compiled 123 knockdowns, including a school record of 25 knockdowns against Brigham Young … Mi Hyun Kim shot a final round of 69 to beat Kelly Robbins by one stroke at the Giant Eagle LPGA Classic in Vienna, Ohio. Kim won $150,000 … Tsuyoshi Shinjo’s autographed, game-used batting gloves fetched $625 during the San Francisco Giants’ wives charity auction. The fundraising effort raised $27,150 … Arizona closer Byung-Hyun Kim was named National League player of the week for July 9-15. Kim, who was selected to his first All-Star Game this season, has 26 saves and a 2.14 ERA. Batters are only hitting .193 off of him.
