Texas Rangers closer Hideki Irabu was released from a Kansas City hospital on July 20 after being hospitalized since July 15 with small blood clots in his arteries and lungs. For the next six to eight weeks, Irabu will probably be on blood-thinning medication, which will likely end his season. He is currently on the 15-day disabled list. In his first season as a full-time closer, Irabu registered 16 saves in 20 opportunities and had a 3-8 record with a 5.74 ERA.
Tiger Woods run for the Grand Slam spiraled to a crash in the third round of the British Open. Woods was in contention for the first two rounds but shot an 81 in the third round his worst score on the pro tour. Wang Zhizhi is playing for the Golden State Warriors summer pro league team because of the Mavericks commitment to the Chinese government. When Zhizhi, who averaged 5.6 points and two rebounds for Dallas last season, was drafted two years ago, the Mavericks agreed to make him available whenever the Chinese government asked. The Minnesota Vikings have agreed to terms with offensive lineman Ed Taamu, a 2002 fourth-round draft choice. Taamu, a two-year starter out of University of Utah, was a two-time All-Mountain West Conference selection.
