Floss Talk by Tenile Wong

Tsuyoshi Shinjo’s season got worse, and then it got ugly. The San Francisco Giants outfielder was placed on the 15-day disabled list when he aggravated a hamstring injury during the Giants’ 4-3 loss to the Cardinals on July 25. Shinjo, who is batting .237 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs, hurt himself while running to second on a double in the second inning. He stayed in the game and later hobbled home to score … The Giants traded two minor-league prospects to the Chicago White Sox for center fielder Kenny Lofton last week, which will likely put Shinjo on the bench when he comes off the disabled list. Lofton, a six-time All-Star, is batting .259 with 22 stolen bases … Jae Weong Seo made his major-league debut on July 22, pitching a perfect eighth inning in the Mets’ loss to the Reds. Seo was optioned back to Triple-A Norfolk a day later to make room on the roster for pitcher Steve Trachsel … American League’s leading hitter Ichiro Suzuki smashed two home runs in a span of three games against the Texas Rangers last week. Suzuki, who has six home runs this season, has hit five of his 14 career home runs against the Rangers … Anaheim Ducks’ Paul Kariya, a recipient of the 2002 Most Assists for Children Award, donated his $25,000 award to the Ronald McDonald House in Vancouver, Canada. Kariya, a restricted free agent, led the Ducks in goals with 32 last season … Gloria Park won her second LPGA title at the Sybase Big Apple Classic, beating Hee Won Han in a sudden-death playoff. Park won $142,500 … Noboru Sugai became the first Japanese golfer to win the Senior British Open at Newcastle, Northern Ireland. Sugai, a 52-year-old from Tokyo, finished 3-under … Petaluma’s Ray Suhandynata, 15, won the San Francisco Junior Golf Championship at Lincoln Park … Linebacker Masafumi Kawaguchi is pushing for a roster spot on the San Francisco 49ers. Kawaguchi, 29, has spent the last six seasons as a starter for the Amsterdam Admirals in NFL Europe, and has participated in training camps for Dallas and Green Bay.
