If you want to beat Tiger Woods, you have to get to him early. Woods cruised to a four-shot victory at the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich., for his 33rd PGA Tour win. Woods is now 25-2 in PGA Tour events when leading or tied for the lead after 54 holes. Woods, who won this year’s Masters and U.S. Open, will be the first to win three majors in a year twice if he wins the PGA Championship in Chaska, Minn., this week … Figure skater Michelle Kwan was awarded the 2002 Teen Choice Award for Best Female Athlete, beating out seven other athletes, including 2002 Olmypics figure skating gold medallist Sarah Hughes. Speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno was nominated for the Best Male Athlete award … Jeong Jang finished in fourth place at the 2002 Weetabix Women’s British Open, four shots behind tournament champion Karrie Webb. Jang won $64,528 … The Houston Rockets obtained a release from Yao Ming’s former team, the Shanghai Sharks, moving the Rockets one step closer to officially signing the No. 1 draft choice in this year’s NBA Draft. The Rockets now must wait to receive a release from the Chinese Basketball Association … Several Rockets billboards have been popping up in Houston, including one with Yao Ming … The Solano Steelheads of the Western Baseball League signed right-handed pitcher Hideki Nagasaka … San Francisco Giants outfielder Tsuyoshi Shinjo, who has been on the disabled list with a strained right hamstring since July 25, began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Fresno. Shinjo will likely play a couple games with the Grizzlies, then return to the Giants … The Seattle Mariners’ Ichiro Suzuki continues to lead the American League in hitting with a .344 average. Suzuki is also fourth in the league with a .408 on base percentage … Texas Rangers pitcher Chan Ho Park is on the disabled list for the second time this season. Park, who is 4-6 with a 7.14 ERA, had never been on the disabled list since reaching the majors in 1994 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Park has already missed six weeks earler in the season after sustaining an injury on opening day.
