Biotechnology Program Hundreds of skilled bioscience jobs are opening in the Bay Area, and Berkeley’s Vista Community College is providing the training to get them. The college is accepting applications for its Fall 2002 Biotechnology Program, now through Sept. 7. Applicants may choose from a two-and-a-half-year associate program in science or two-year occupational certificate program. Enrollment fee for California residents is $11 per unit. Careers in Travel Careers in Travel for the 21st Century examines new career prospects in a changing and largely restructured travel industry. The session takes place Saturday, Sept. 7, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. at Vista Community College, 2020 Milvia St., Room 303, between University and Addison streets, Berkeley. Chinese Caregiver Assistance Program The Older Adult and Family Center of Stanford University of School of Medicine and Palo Alto VA offer a free one-on-one, in-home, caregiver program to Bay Area residents. The program is designed for Chinese women who provide regular care to a relative with memory loss and other cognitive impairment. Computer Software Classes Two-year associate degree and one-year occupational certificate programs in computer information systems and office technology begin Thursday, Aug. 22 at Berkeley’s Vista Community College. PACE Fall 2002 enrollment for Program for Adult College Education is open at Berkeley’s Vista Community College now through Saturday, Sept. 7. PACE is a college alternative for adults with job and family responsibilities. The program allows them to finish their freshman and sophomore years in two-and-a-half years, then transfer to a four-year college to complete their bachelor’s degree. Sign Language Class Applications for Vista Community College’s Fall 2003 American Sign Language classes are being accepted at Berkeley’s Vista Community College. Art and Wine Festival The Flying Angels Chinese Dance Company of San Francisco presents exciting “mini shows” featuring the many colorful dances of China. Arts and Crafts Fair The Jan Ken Po Gakko will host its annual Arts and Crafts Fair, featuring Asian arts and crafts, such as kimono-embellished clothing, pillows, jewelry, dolls, framed artwork and other decorative household items. Bonsai Show Enjoy the art of bonsai while viewing over 150 magnificent trees, some as old as 350 years. The Redwood Empire Bonsai Society presents one of the largest shows in the country, which will be offering free demonstrations, quality raffle and door prizes, a large sales floor and refreshments Saturday, Aug. 24, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 25, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. at Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building, 1351 Maple Ave. Free admission and parking. Chinatown Night Market Fair Chinatown Neighborhood Inc. presents Chinatown Night Market Fair at Chinatown’s Portsmouth Square every Saturday, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. until Nov. 9. The evening program will include traditional lion dancing, Chinese opera, musical performances, Chinese painting, fortunetellers and feng shui consultants. Participating merchants will validate up to two hours parking from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Portsmouth Square Garage and from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at St. Mary’s Garage with minimum purchase. Filipino Community Networking Convention Sponsored by the National Federation of Filipino American Associations, the San Francisco Philippine Consulate General and LBC, the 1st Global Filipino Community Networking Convention offers the Filipino community an opportunity to address common interests and aspirations. Seeing Shocking proof that we don’t all see the same thing when looking at the same scene and that we can’t always believe what we do see, will be revealed when the Exploratorium unveils 70 exhibits of its new Seeing collection in a temporary exhibition presented through Jan. 31, 2003, at the Exploratorium, located inside the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Tennis Tournament Join Daly City Parks and Recreation in the 12th annual “Gateway” Tennis Tournament. This single elimination tournament is held in 14 different skill divisions. Next Steps Workshop Hospice by the Bay will offer a workshop designed for people who are ready to rebuild their lives after the loss of a loved one, but not sure what to do next. This two-session workshop will feature group discussions, partner exercises and individual coaching Sept. 21 and 28, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. at Hospice by the Bay, 1540 Market St. #350, San Francisco. Secret Samurai Down the street from the Crissy Field Center is the building where the Army secretly trained Japanese American soldiers to be translators and battlefield interrogators during World War II. The National Japanese American Historical Society proposes to reuse the same building to recognize the contribution of the Japanese Americans. Web Classes for Students The Chinese Culture Center of San Francisco is offering a web class for students grades 4 - 12. Subjects may include Flash, Dreamweaver, HTML, Javascript and Cascading Style Sheets. There will be an emphasis on creating web pages involved with Chinese culture.
