ANNOUNCEMENTSMiss Asia Beauty Pageant There is an open call for aspirants of the Miss Asia - Northern California Beauty Pageant. The pageant is open to young women of Asian descent, ages 18 - 27, who are currently based in Northern California. Sign Language Class Applications for Vista Community Colleges Fall 2003 American Sign Language classes are being accepted at Berkeleys Vista Community College. EVENTSMillbrae Art and Wine Festival The Flying Angels Chinese Dance Company of San Francisco presents exciting mini shows featuring the many colorful dances of China. Arts and Crafts Fair The Jan Ken Po Gakko will host its annual Arts and Crafts Fair, featuring Asian arts and crafts, such as kimono-embellished clothing, pillows, jewelry, dolls, framed artwork and other decorative household items. Filipino American Arts Exposition The Filipino American Arts Exposition presents Pistahan 2002, its ninth annual cultural extravaganza featuring a parade along Market Street and a two-day, outdoor multi-arts fair at the Yerba Buena Gardens Esplanade in San Francisco. The fair will include booths and cultural displays along with live entertainment on the main outdoor stage Saturday, Aug. 31, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m and Sunday, Sept. 1, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Admission is free. Kings Mountain Art Fair One hundred thirty juried artists present fine arts and crafts in the redwoods at the 39th annual Kings Mountain Art Fair Labor Day weekend, Aug. 31 - Sept. 2, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Kings Mountain Community Center, located at 13889 Skyline Blvd. (Hwy. 35), above Woodside and Half Moon Bay. Mountain View Art and Wine Festival The 31st annual Mountain View Art and Wine Festival is one of Californias largest festival where more than 200,000 art lovers gather to listen to non-stop R&B, rock n roll, jazz, soul, swing, world beat and other music. Six hundred fifty artists and craft makers will show their latest work while international food, wine and microbrews are served. Activities are also available for kids. VOLUNTEERINGVolunteer Training for Adult Docents The Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park is offering a 13-week interpretive training program that emphasizes tour guiding techniques, signature plants in the Gardens and basic botany. No prior horticultural knowledge is required. The trainings run Sept. 17 - Dec. 17, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., plus three Wednesday evening lectures to be announced. WORKSHOPSSecret Samurai Down the street from the Crissy Field Center is the building where the Army secretly trained Japanese American soldiers to be translators and battlefield interrogators during World War II. The National Japanese American Historical Society proposes to reuse the same building to recognize the contribution of the Japanese Americans. This class is designed for beginner to advanced bowlers. Regulation bowling shoes and bowling balls will be furnished for your convenience. Parental Loss Support Group Hospice by the Bay will offer an eight-week Tuesday evening support group for adults coping with the loss of one or both parents.
