Asian American Studies Courses We Think Should Be Taught

While the range is getting better, there are still some classes that would make for a more rounded out, rich Asian American studies major. Here’s a supplementary course list that AsianWeek thinks should be implemented at all AA studies programs.

Asians and Alcohol Consumption

An in-depth study on how alcohol affects different APA groups. Some questions to be examined are: Is there a scientific reason behind the so-called “Asian curse”? If so, what is the etymology of this phrase? Which ethnicity can hold its liquor the best? This course looks at specific ethnic Asian alcohols and their effects, such as sake, soju and coconut toddy. The manufacturing and marketing of Asian beers will also be studied. Weekly field trips to bars are required.

The Asian Baseball Player Phenomenon

This course focuses on the study of the Asian baseball player: their performance, marketability and history. Extensive time will be spent analyzing star players like Ichiro Suzuki and Hideo Nomo, as well as both minor league and college players. An entire week will be dedicated to the Shinjo cult of celebrity. (Note: Class may be canceled due to the baseball player strike, in which case, please refer to the spring semester course “The Asian Basketball Player: A New Breed of Baller.”)

South Asian American and Marriage

Complete with Internet matchmaking, speed dating, professional networking/dating conferences and the old standby of flying back to India for a week to tie the knot to someone you’ve never seen before, South Asian American marriage practices combine old world values with modern American life. This course studies the success rates of arranged and “love” marriages, as well as scrutinizes the problems and social structures that keep these traditions in place. Guest speakers will discuss the finer points of "biodata,” astrological matchmaking, and the dos and don’ts of an initial meeting. (Note: Please do not join this class just to meet eligible South Asian men/women.)
