Biotechnology Program Hundreds of skilled bioscience jobs are opening in the Bay Area, and Berkeley’s Vista Community College is providing the training to get them. The college is accepting applications for its Fall 2002 Biotechnology Program, now through Sept. 7. Applicants may choose from a two-and-a-half-year associate program in science or two-year occupational certificate program. Enrollment fee for California residents is $11 per unit. Careers in Travel Careers in Travel for the 21st Century examines new career prospects in a changing and largely restructured travel industry. The session takes place Saturday, Sept. 7, 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. at Vista Community College, 2020 Milvia St., Room 303, between University and Addison streets, Berkeley. Chinese Caregiver Assistance Program The Older Adult and Family Center of Stanford University of School of Medicine and Palo Alto VA offer a free one-on-one, in-home, caregiver program to Bay Area residents. The program is designed for Chinese women who provide regular care to a relative with memory loss and other cognitive impairment. Miss Asia Beauty Pageant There is an open call for aspirants of the Miss Asia -Northern California Beauty Pageant. The pageant is open to young women of Asian descent, ages 18 - 27, who are currently based in Northern California. Contenders will be judged on the basis of physical beauty and major competitions, namely personality interview, swimsuit and evening gown. Deadline for filing is Sept. 5. PACE Fall 2002 enrollment for Program for Adult College Education (PACE) is open at Berkeley’s Vista Community College now through Saturday, Sept. 7. PACE is a college alternative for adults with job and family responsibilities. The program allows them to finish their freshman and sophomore years, in two-and-a-half years, then transfer to a four-year college to complete their bachelor’s degree. Sign Language Class Applications for Vista Community College’s Fall 2003 American Sign Language classes are being accepted at Berkeley’s Vista Community College. Arts and Crafts Fair The Jan Ken Po Gakko will host its annual Arts and Crafts Fair, featuring Asian arts and crafts, such as kimono-embellished clothing, pillows, jewelry, dolls, framed artwork and other decorative household items. California Wine Classic Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation will be celebrating the eighth annual California Wine Classic on Sunday, Sept. 29 at the clubhouse at Stern Grove in San Francisco from noon to 4 p.m. Proceeds from food, wine, classical cars, a live and silent auction benefit the Northern California Chapter of CCFA in support of basic and biomedical research, public and professional education, support groups for patients and other programs. Chinatown Night Market Fair Chinatown Neighborhood Inc. presents Chinatown Night Market Fair in Chinatown’s Portsmouth Square every Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. until Nov. 9. The evening program will include traditional lion dancing, Chinese opera, musical performances, Chinese painting, fortunetellers and feng shui consultants. Participating merchants will validate up to two hours parking from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Portsmouth Square Garage and from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at St. Mary’s Garage with minimum purchase. JazzZoo The San Francisco Zoo presents the second annual JazzZoo event with live music, wine tasting and vintage Ferrari displays. This event will take place Saturday, Sept. 14, 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. All proceeds will go to raise funds for the Zoo’s wildlife conservation and education programs. JazzZoo is 21+ event. Mountain View Art and Wine Festival The 31st annual Mountain View Art and Wine Festival is one of California’s largest festival where more than 200,000 art lovers gather to listen to non-stop R&B, rock ’n’ roll, jazz, soul, swing, world beat and other music. Six hundred fifty artists and craft makers will show their latest work while international food, wine and microbrews are served. Activities are also available for kids. The event will take place Sept. 7 and 8, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. on Castro Street (between El Camino Real and Evelyn Avenue), Mountain View. Seeing Shocking proof that we don’t all see the same thing when looking at the same scene and that we can’t always believe what we do see, will be revealed when the Exploratorium unveils 70 exhibits of its new Seeing collection in a temporary exhibition presented through Jan. 31, 2003, at the Exploratorium, located inside the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Child Abuse Prevention Center The Child Abuse Prevention Center will be offering an opportunity to join one of its Volunteer Case Aide programs, which assist children and their families by providing service requested by county social workers. Volunteer Training for Adult Docents The Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park is offering a 13-week Interpretive Training Program that emphasizes tour guiding techniques, signature plants in the Gardens and basic botany. No prior horticultural knowledge is required. The trainings run Sept. 17 - Dec. 17, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., plus three Wednesday evening lectures to be announced. The trainings will take place at the County Fair Building, Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Golden Gate Park, Ninth Avenue at Lincoln Way. Fee: $75. WORKSHOPS

Fun Bowling Basics Come learn an easy approach to bowling. This class is designed for beginner to advanced bowlers. Regulation bowling shoes and bowling balls will be furnished for your convenience. Japanese Language Classes Soko Gakuen will be provide Japanese classes with native teachers in San Francisco’s Japantown. Next Steps Workshop Hospice by the Bay will offer a workshop designed for people who are ready to rebuild their lives after the loss of a loved one, but not sure what to do next. This two-session workshop will feature group discussions, partner exercises and individual coaching Sept. 21 and 28, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. at Hospice by the Bay, 1540 Market St. Suite 350, San Francisco. Parental Loss Support Group Hospice by the Bay will offer an eight-week Tuesday evening support group for adults coping with the loss of one or both parents. The group will run Oct. 1 - Nov. 19, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Sessions will include grief education, sharing stories, emotional support, writing and art.
