Adoptions A free orientation seminar for the public with complete, up-to-date information on how to safely and successfully adopt children internationally will be held Sunday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m. at 1500 Noriega St., Suite 110 (at 22nd Avenue). Chinese Caregiver Assistance Program The Older Adult and Family Center of Stanford University of School of Medicine and Palo Alto VA offer a free one-on-one, in-home, caregiver program to Bay Area residents. The program is designed for Chinese women who provide regular care to a relative with memory loss and other cognitive impairment. Participants will learn how to reduce stress, and to cope with difficulties associated with caregiving and assessment. Enrollment is ongoing. An Evening with Martin Yan Sacramento Chinese Culture Foundation is proud to present its fundraiser An Evening with Martin Yan. Dinner, catered by Lu-Shan Restaurant, will be followed by a cooking performance by chef Martin Yan. This event will be held 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Confucius Temple located in downtown Sacramento (on Fourth and I streets). Tickets : $50 in advance, $60 at the door. California Wine Classic Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation will be celebrating the eighth annual California Wine Classic on Sunday, Sept. 29 at the clubhouse at Stern Grove in San Francisco from noon to 4 p.m. Proceeds from food, wine and a live and silent auction benefit the Northern California Chapter of CCFA in support of basic and biomedical research, public and professional education, support groups for patients and other programs. Chinatown Night Market Fair Chinatown Neighborhood Inc. presents Chinatown Night Market Fair in Chinatown’s Portsmouth Square every Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. until Nov. 9. The evening program will include traditional lion dancing, Chinese opera, musical performances, Chinese painting, fortunetellers and feng shui consultants. Participating merchants will validate up to two hours parking from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Portsmouth Square Garage and from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at St. Mary’s Garage with minimum purchase. Dekada The Likha Pilipino Folk Ensemble, one of the leading Philippine folk dance companies outside the Philippines, celebrates its 10th-year odyssey with Dekada, an artistic theatrical interpretation of ethnic dance forms. Performances will include the world premiere of newly researched dances by artistic director and Pamana 2002 awardee Rudi Soriano. JazzZoo The San Francisco Zoo presents the second annual JazzZoo event with live music, wine tasting and vintage Ferrari displays. This event will take place Saturday, Sept. 14, 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. All proceeds will go to raise funds for the Zoo’s wildlife conservation and education programs. JazzZoo is a 21+ event. Library Open House Celebrate Moon Festival Day by visiting San Francisco’s Public Library Sunset Branch’s open house Saturday, Sept. 21, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at 1305 -18th Ave., San Francisco. The library will be celebrating the expansion of Chinese and Vietnamese language books, videos and DVDs. Children’s program begins at 10:30 a.m., and entertainment of traditional Vietnamese music and a Bejing opera mini-show begins at noon. Refreshments will be served.

Science on Stage Magic Theatre, in partnership with the Exploratorium, presents Science on Stage 2002, its second series of script-in-hand performances of new plays about science and technology. Showtime is Wednesdays, Sept. 18 and 25 and Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. For more info: www.exploratorium.edu.

Seeing Shocking proof that we don’t all see the same thing when looking at the same scene and that we can’t always believe what we do see, will be revealed when the Exploratorium unveils 70 exhibits of its new Seeing collection in a temporary exhibition presented through Jan. 31, 2003, at the Exploratorium, located inside the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Child Abuse Prevention Center The Child Abuse Prevention Center will be offering an opportunity to join one of its Volunteer Case Aide programs, which assist children and their families by providing service requested by county social workers. WORKSHOPS

Combating Weight Problems in Children St. Luke’s Hospital will be holding a free class that discusses the consequences of poor nutrition and lack of physical activity on children and how to help them maintain a healthy weight. The class will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, 10:30 a.m. - noon at St. Luke’s Hospital-Solarium, Room 3555, Cesar Chavez St. at Valencia and Guerrero streets. Pre-registration is required. Japanese Language Classes Soko Gakuen will be provide Japanese classes with native teachers in San Francisco’s Japantown. Next Steps Workshop Hospice by the Bay will offer a workshop designed for people who are ready to rebuild their lives after the loss of a loved one, but not sure what to do next. This two-session workshop will feature group discussions, partner exercises and individual coaching Sept. 21 and 28, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. at Hospice by the Bay, 1540 Market St., Suite 350, San Francisco. Parental Loss Support Group Hospice by the Bay will offer an eight-week, Tuesday evening support group for adults coping with the loss of one or both parents. The group will run Oct. 1 - Nov. 19, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Sessions will include grief education, story-sharing, emotional support, writing and art. Strong! Fit! Flexible! Purple Moon Dance Project, San Francisco’s local dance troupe, presents a free workshop series called Strong! Fit! Flexible! for women of color and their friends 50 years and older. The workshop will include meditation, yoga/gentle stretching and dances from different cultures. The workshop will be held Sept. 24 and Oct. 29, 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m., continuing through November and December at the San Francisco LGBT Community Center and Oakland YWCA. Volunteer Training for Adult Docents The Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park is offering a 13-week Interpretive Training Program that emphasizes tour guiding techniques, signature plants in the gardens and basic botany. No prior horticultural knowledge is required. The trainings run Sept. 17 - Dec. 17, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m., plus three Wednesday evening lectures to be announced. The trainings will take place at the County Fair Building, Strybing Arboretum and Botanical Gardens, Golden Gate Park, Ninth Avenue at Lincoln Way. Fee: $75.
