Fundraisers and Spectacular Moments

DRAMATIC AND SPECTACULAR MOMENTS: Walls That Talk was a dramatic evening when over 300 patrons listened to the anguished poetry that was composed by the early Chinese immigrants who were detained and sometimes incarcerated for years on Angel Island. Only on its third annual fundraiser, The Angel Island Immigration Station Fundraising Drive successfully touched many present day descendants of Angel Island immigrats.

For the early immigrants, the Angel Island experience brings back bitter memories of outright cruelty and discrimination. Immigration policies eased up after the 1940s.

Those “voices” and the poems that were presented on Oct. 3 by Francis Christian Chan, Genny Lim, Jason Mateo, Ishle Yi Park and Beau Sia captured the sense of despair for so many immigrants. Honored for their dedication to the preservation of this historical site were Surrey Blackburn, Thomas Layton of the Gerbode Foundation and Yeni Wong.

The Nan Hai Arts Center presented a spectacular dance show entitled, “The Heavenly Horse.” Inspired by the music and stories of the Silk Road, the show played to full houses in Cupertino and in Oakland, Sept. 22-24.

MORE MONEY: Another successful fundraiser was recently held by Asian Health Services. Their dinner-dance and large auction were held at the Marriott Hotel in Oakland. Frances Hanks, Shirley Foo, Sherwin and Margaret Louie, and Paul and Genevieve Ong were co-chairs for the event, which raised money for a new dental clinic to serve the uninsured and other underserved members of the community.

Oakland Lodge Chinese American Citizens Alliance recently awarded the largest number of scholarships in its history to the following future leaders of the East Bay: Christina Jung, Adrienne Man, Stephanie Teng, Annie Ho, Wayne Leung, Jennifer Yu, Chendean Ngo, Sarah Chinn, Felicia Wu, Carina Lieu and Tiffany Gee. Liang Chen received the Dr. Paul Gan Memorial Award.

For seniors in Chinatown, the Oakland Lodge CACA also hosted a full service luncheon with gift packages and entertainment at the Pioneer Hall on Sept. 20. The senior luncheon was chaired by Dick Young and co-chaired by Mary Chan and Luther Lee.
