San Francisco Candidates

State Assembly District 12
Leland Yee
Yee has been an independent voice for Asian Pacific Americans on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors for years. Not caving to machine politics, he also stayed clear of progressive bashing tactics. This conviction makes him a great candidate to be the first Chinese American to represent the heavily APA district in Sacramento.

Assessor-Recorder
Mabel Teng
Mabel Teng, back in the March primary, had a detailed report about ways to improve and modernize the department. Current Assessor-recorder Doris Ward has been losing the city millions of dollars and is currently under investigation for corrupt practices. Vote for Teng.

BART Board
James Fang*
James Fang served on the BART Board in 1990 and helped lead the extension of the line to the San Francisco airport. His experience and dedication put him leagues ahead of the opponent, whose vague ideas for the board don’t even deserve mention.

Superior Court Seat 10
Sean Connolly
Connolly’s diverse experience as both a public defender and a representative to the Police Officer’s Association would make him a wise judge. Vote for him.

San Francisco Supervisor, District 12
Gavin Newsom*
Newsom has always been a moderate voice on the board, and a supporter of small business. He was involved in tough issues like MUNI reform and customer service in 1998 and this year’s Care Not Cash campaign to help the homeless situation.

San Francisco Supervisor, District 4
Andrew Lee
For a district over fifty percent APA, Lee is supported by Mayor Willie Brown, District Attorney Terence Hallinan and Assemblyman Kevin Shelley. He also has the support of the Small Property Owners of San Francisco and of the leadership of the S.F. Neighbors Association. The non-profit director has pledged to make City Hall more responsive to basic resident needs like fixing potholes, installing stop signs and cleaning up streets.

San Francisco Supervisor, District 6
Burke Strunsky
As an assistant district attorney, Burke Strunsky has prosecuted some of the more vexing questions in the district. Strunsky supports Proposition N, but also favors setting up a quality of life court to prosecute issues like public drunkenness and urination that are of concern for a growing community of Asian American families and small businesses. At the end of the day, his experience with the law gives him the upper hand. Vote for Strunksy.

San Francisco Supervisor, District 8
Bevan Dufty
The former director of neighborhood services started his career working in the mailroom for the mayor. Dufty is a former aide to Congress and to former Supervisor Susan Leal. Unlike other candidates, Dufty is not an ideologue. He supports affordable homeownership opportunities like Proposition R, which is why he has the support of the Small Property Owners of San Francisco and Plan C.

San Francisco Supervisor, District 10
Sophie Maxwell*
The supervisor led the efforts during economic tough times to trim over $300 million from the city budget. Maxwell has focused on environmental issues and economic development, including supporting Home Depot in her district.

Board of Education
Eddie Chin*
The only Asian Pacific American running for the board, Chin has had a strong record this past four years on the Board’s budget and facilities committee. He supports recruiting teachers by providing subsidized housing.

Board of Education
Daniel Guillory*
Attorney Daniel Guillory was appointed to the Board by Mayor Brown when Frank Chong resigned earlier this year. Before being appointed, Guillory was an earnest attendee of meetings and even served on a schools task force. Having an attorney on the board is always a good thing, and Guillory has been doing a good job so far.

Board of Education
Alexandra Pastine
Pastine’s experience as a consultant for public agencies and municipalities will help her bring about important changes on the board.

Community College Board
Lawrence Wong*
Wong, an eight-year board member, led the effort to build the new Mission and Chinatown/ North Beach campuses, and established an innovative HIV-testing program at CCSF. He is interested in pushing for a Richmond campus and is endorsed by APA contractors for his support of their participation in constructing the Chinatown campus.

Community College Board
Johnnie Carter Jr.*
Appointed by Mayor Brown in 2001, Carter wants to make more of the Community College Board’s meetings open to the public. He also wants to expand the guaranteed admission program that CCSF has with UC colleges. He made a strong effort to communicate with Asian and other minority laborers over the PLA controversy.

Community College Board
Anita Grier*
Grier has served on the board for four years and even though she voted for the PLA, she wants to make sure that all contractors have an equitable shot at the work. As an administrator at Lowell High School, Grier wants to facilitate a seamless relationship between CCSF and the SFUSD.

* - Denotes incumbent
