Letters to the Editor

Is Prop. 52 For Real?

DEAR EDITOR: I notice that AsianWeek endorses Proposition 52, Same Day Voter Registration, because “it could be an important tool in helping to empower the immigrant community,” “Endorsements 2002” (Oct. 17).

Perhaps, but I’ve also received from the California Democratic Party a mailer that contains misleading information. It states that under current California election law, many people may actually be denied the right to vote — like citizens who turn 18, move, or return home from military service just before an election.

In reality, citizens who will be 18 on or before election day can register to vote before the deadline; people who move after the deadline but before election day can vote at their old precinct one more time before having to re-register; people who return from military service but who have maintained permanent residence in California can apply for absentee ballots or vote in their home precincts on election day.

The registration deadline is now a whopping 15 days before election day, more liberal than many other states. Most people plan their social calendars and summer vacations much further in advance than 15 days!

Don’t be fooled by supporters of Prop 52. People who fail to vote usually do so by choice, not because they are not eligible.

Get Kung Fool Off eBay

DEAR EDITOR: I am appalled at the Kung Fool mask, “Don’t Be Fooled By the Kung Fool Company,” (Oct. 17). I am further appalled that eBay has not stopped the sale of them on their site, even though I sent multiple messages to them. Or they may have gotten some pulled, but new ones keep popping up. Maybe you have the media “pull” to draw attention to this matter.
