It Happened in Alaska

DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ: The Iraqi Parliament has already rejected the new proposal for renewed inspections, leaving it up to Saddam. Seems vaguely democratic doesn’t it?

Saddam does know a thing about democracy — to the extreme. He recently held a referendum on his leadership where 100 percent of the people voted. 100 percent! Imagine that. San Francisco can’t get it together to have ballots at every precinct, but in Iraq, 100 percent turnout to vote — or else. I’m guessing about the “or else” part. I’m sure Saddam just wanted a perfect score. But someone should tell him democracy doesn’t work that way. Not if he wants to make it look legit...

Lead Editorial: Why We Did It

We began tossing around the idea of doing our own Best of the Bay issue sometime last year at a staff meeting, all of us excitedly calling out different sections we would like to have that would be specific to the Asian Pacific American community. But, we wondered, was it necessary? This city already has a number of well-done “Best ofs” that seem to leave no rock unturned. Then, reading the listing for “Best Tapioca Ball Drinks” in this year’s Bay Guardian cinched it. They listed Venture Frogs, that weird, dotcom relic, wannabe fusion restaurant in San Francisco’s AMC Van Ness movie theater. Has anyone even eaten there??? We knew then that we had a big job to do...
