APA Designers Take on the Fall
August 22, 2003
Designer: Marilyn Yu
Label: Plutonium Clothing
Inspiration: Dressing up is always fun! Plutonium Clothing carries an eccentric flavor for those special occasions, while maintaining a convenient and comfortable fit. For Yu, comfort should not be sacrificed for fashion. “Clothing should be fun to wear and fit you well at the same time — not stuff you have to worry about,” Yu said. Each piece has a theatrical feel, with bright colors, atypical lines and exaggerated details.
For the Fall: Plutonium Clothing is custom-made designs. Collaboration between Yu and her clients ensures each piece meets the specific needs of the individual. Her current project is wedding apparel with a flowery feel and long sleeves in the style of the Tang dynasty imperial dress.

Designer: Sunhee Moon
Label: Sunhee Moon
Inspiration: Children’s clothing. Also, styles drawn from classic 1950s movies, combined with traditional cuts.
For the Fall: Moon visited Los Angeles, where she noticed a woman dressed stylishly in vivid, contrasting colors. For Moon, this look was reminiscent of the bright colors, soft fabrics and bold patterns of children’s clothing. Other pieces in Moon’s collection boast smooth, clean lines for a simple, elegant style.
Sunhee Moon is located at 142 Fillmore St., San Francisco, CA 94117. For other retailer locations, visit www.sunheemoon.com.
Designer: Carol Young
Label: Undesigned
Inspiration: Young majored in architecture while at UC Berkeley and, later, accepted a fellowship at Cornell University, where she explored the functionality of clothing for “urban nomads” in conjunction with environmentally friendly needs. The combination of her interests spawned Undesigned, a style inspired by modern architecture. The practical activewear is constructed with environmentally friendly materials.
For the Fall: Young’s collection will utilize the beauty and texture of hemp, cotton and vintage materials in collaboration with the lightweight and water resistant attributes of Italian microfiber and French meryl nylon.

Designers: Ivy Chan, Umay Mohammed and Shinobu Sering
Label: Nisa, San Francisco
Inspiration: “Nisa” is Arabic for woman. And that is just who this line is for — urban women on the go. Inspiration is drawn from each of the designers’ diverse cultural backgrounds, education and experiences, creating a clothing label with a distinct blend of “femininity with comfort.” Nisa brings together Sering’s expertise as a stylist and former owner of a street-wear company. Mohammed, who has a background in business and marketing, has a preference for vintage clothing. Meanwhile, Chan is an expert at pattern making and design.
For the Fall: Nisa’s fall line will draw upon vintage fabrics and the contrasting textures of cotton and wool. As always, pieces will be focused on a “woman’s comfort, whether it be at work, school, at home or out and about on the town.”
Nisa is located at 3610 19th St., San Francisco, CA 94110. For other retailer locations, visit www.nisasf.com.
