I pretty much only play sports games, but I have wanted to find a game or two that will break up the monotony of 22-3 wins on World Series Baseball 2K3.

So when Mega Man X7 found its way to me, it was a nice change of pace.

The new gadget with X7 is that Capcom has made portions of the game 3D, interspersed among the traditional 2D views. I like the 3D perspective, which presents various camera views that work well. The controls seem pretty easy, including the ability to lock on to targets and to change characters on the fly.

This initial Mega Man offering for PlayStation 2 is one of six being released on various platforms this year to commemorate the Mega Man series’ 15th anniversary.

X7’s animation and story line are more than satisfactory. X and his trusty sidekick, Zero, are back for more adventures, trying to escape from Red Alert. This time, they are joined by the new character, Axl, who has the cool ability to transform himself into an enemy for a brief time. Axl’s abilities allow for a bit more deceptive strategy.

Two pals who are veterans of the Mega Man series tried X7 out and enjoyed the new capabilities. However, some of the criticism of X7 has been that it hasn’t taken the series to another level, despite the addition of 3D views.

Still, X7 is a much better version than X5 or X6 and debuting on the PS2 platform makes it worth the coin.
