Scholarship Contest The Japan Exchange and Teaching Alumni Association of Northern California is offering a $1,000 college scholarship to high school students who have demonstrated a sincere interest in Japan. Applications must be received by Jan. 10. For more info: www.jetaanc.org.

UC Extension Now is the time to sign up for one of the over 1,000 courses the UC Berkeley Extension program will be offering this spring. Human Rights Activist Search The San Francisco Human Rights Commission is looking for new members to serve as its eyes and ears, advising Commissioners about community issues to bring to public hearing. Committees currently seeking advisors are: the employment committee, the issues committee, the LGBT committee, and the minority/women business enterprise committee. Kristi Yamaguchi Holiday Ice Rink Take the family (or just yourself!) ice skating to celebrate the arrival of winter. Health Commission Be part of the public at the San Francisco Health Commission’s bi-monthly open-to-the-public meeting, at the Department of Public Health, 101 Grove St., Room 300, on Tue., Jan. 7, 3 p.m.

Family explorations! Celebrate the Lunar New Year at the Oakland Museum of California. Performances will include lion dancers, the Korean Women Drummers, a tae kwan do demonstration, Vietnamese and Tibetan dancers, storytelling by DEAF media, cooking demonstrations, a marketplace and craft activites. Youth SPEAKs The young poets and activists of Youth Speaks, San Francisco’s literary nonprofit for teenagers, invite you to Bringing the Noise for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an evening of poetry, slamming and music, benefitting Youth Speaks’ many outreach programs. Words Flow Like Water Educators are invited to a special poetry workshop focusing on how to help students turn outdoor education experiences into creative poetry. The workshop is designed for both formal and informal educators and will help those who work with youth guide them into an informed respect for the natural world and their place in it.
