Jazz at Pearls in Final Months
Pearl Wong looks back at 30 years in the business
By Ji Hyun Lim |AsianWeek Staff Writer
On a typical night on the corner of Columbus and Broadway in San Francisco, lights from the rows of bars, restaurants and strip clubs flicker like stars. Staring out of the large windows of Jazz at Pearls, a 12-year old North Beach establishment, one catches cars zooming by, leaving tracers of brake lights. Homeless men mime in front of the glass barrier to this dim, candle-lit venue.
Inside, the drums thump harmoniously along with the saxophone, the piano notes whip across the room and then fade as the drummer picks up his cue for a solo. The room is filled with a comfortably dressed audience. Patrons sit quietly, lightly tapping their fingers on their small tables, feet slightly moving up and down, synchronous to the bass.
