The State of Our Union

This week when the president told us the state of our union, how many of you felt he was really talking to you, Mr. and Ms. Asian Pacific America? Did you feel like anything being said on screen could be connected to your life?

But what sense of belonging and partnership did you feel when you saw Gov. Gary Locke of Washington follow the president with the Democratic response? This is not to be partisan. To prove it, I had the sound turned down for both of them.

Voices From the Community: The Importance of Giving

In 2001, a national survey revealed that most Americans think of Asian Pacific Americans as being insular, keeping to themselves and not contributing enough to American life. I know a lot about that survey because I led its development and was present for its release by the Committee of 100, a national organization of Chinese American leaders on whose board I serve.

As one who is committed to improving both the lot of APAs and the way we are perceived by other Americans, I care deeply about debunking that stereotype. That’s why I was very pleased, last spring in San Jose, to participate in a panel discussion as part of the Committee of 100’s annual conference on Chinese American philanthropy. The event provided an opportunity for me and for other Chinese Americans to tell the stories of why and how we give.
