Yuri Kochiyama Leadership Institute WILD for Human Rights invites Bay Area women aged 17–23 to apply for the newly created Yuri Kochiyama Leadership institute. The series of nine workshop sessions will bring together 12 young women of diverse ethnic backgrounds and experiences who are strongly interested in making social change in their communities to practice leadership skills, meet revolutionary women, take action and connect their life struggles. Valentine Adoption Fair Find a furry valentine at San Francisco SPCA’s and San Francisco Animal Care and Control’s fourth annual Valentine Adoption Fair, on Sat., Feb. 8, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters will all be there, looking for loving new owners. Managing Osteoarthritis Learn about treatment options and self-care for daily living with osteoarthritis, in a free class at St. Luke’s Hospital. Chinese New Year Run/Walk Sprint, trot or stroll, into the Year of the Ram, with the YMCA’s annual Chinese New Year Run/Walk on Sun., Feb. 9, 8 a.m. The 5K/10K event benefits the Chinatown YMCA youth programs and follows a scenic loop course through Chinatown, North Beach and Embarcadero. Day of Remembrance Commemorate Executive Order 9066, which sent Japanese Americans to internment camps during WWII with the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California. On Sun., Feb. 23, the JCCCNC will hold Defending the Constitution Then and Now, a benefit event featuring a screening of the new documentary film Hidden Internment: The Art Shibayama Story, at the AMC Kabuki Theatre, 1881 Post St., San Francisco. How to Adopt ACCEPT Adoption and Counseling Agency, a nonprofit, state-licensed group specializing in international adoption, will hold two free seminars giving couples and individuals an introduction to the procedure for adopting foreign-born babies. Money for College College-bound high school seniors and their families can get their questions about financial aid answered by experts at AACE Educational Services and the SF College Access Center in a free community information session. Help will be available in English, Cantonese and Spanish, and representatives will be able to give students individual assistance with their financial aid applications. Shintaido for Caregivers Professional and volunteer caregivers for people with AIDS and terminal diseases are invited to a weekend shintaido and brushwork workshop, sponsored by Hospice by the Bay and the American School of Japanese Arts. Faces of the Soul Open yourself up to your ancestor and spirit guides at a workshop hosted by the Lifelong Learning program at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Artists and authors Kaleo and Elise Dirlam Ching will guide participants through chi gung and acupressure therapy, then lead the group in creating plaster molds of their own faces, embellished with the inspiration of their ancestors and spirit guides.
