HARVARD MUSEUM
‘Bamboo Through Four Seasons’ Exhibited
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Spanning 900 years of art, A Compelling Legacy: Masterworks of East Asian Painting opens at Harvard’s Arthur Sackler Museum this weekend. The 80 Chinese, Korean and Japanese paintings are entirely from the university’s collection.
The eight Korean pieces are recent additions. Several, shown for the first time, accompany master bamboo painter Yu Tok-chang’s “Bamboo through the Four Seasons”, considered the finest Korean literati screen in the West.
Liu Shiru’s “Branch of Blossoming Plum” stands out among the Chinese paintings for its evocative expression of ideas, feelings and personality. Among the Japanese paintings, the fragment of a hanging scroll titled “The Former Affairs of the Bodhisattva Medicine King, Chapter 23 of the Lotus Sutra” is part of the first text to recount that women could be transformed into bodhisattvas without having to be reborn as men, changing how the Japanese perceived the path to enlightenment.
