Mineta Family Adds Grandson Matthew

December 31, 2004

David Mineta, the oldest son of Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta, and his wife, Christine, have become the parents of a new baby son on Dec. 20. Weighing in at 8 pounds and 1 ounce and measuring 20 inches in length, the new baby is named Matthew Norman Mineta. The Minetas also have a 2-1/2-year-old daughter named Lauryn.

With a big smile on his face, David Mineta, who is a school board member in the South San Francisco area and the associate director of Asian American Recovery Services, said, “Both Mom and son are doing fine and should be home soon.” In his youth, David enjoyed playing baseball and other sports; family and friends predicted, “He’ll be coaching this newest Mineta on the baseball diamond pretty soon.”

In Washington, D.C., grandfather Norman Mineta beamed with pride and gave instructions to his staff to distribute bags of M&M candy in small, decorated trays on each table in the Transportation Department’s cafeteria. “He was really happy when he came in,” an aide shared. “MM for short stands for Matthew Mineta, and that was the secretary’s way of letting everybody know he has a new grandson.”
