U.S. Released Japanese Student
The Federal government released Japanese student Choichiro Yatani, whom it had imprisoned for six weeks without a hearing on the suspicion that he had once belonged to a radical organization. Detained after trying to return to the U.S. after a trip to the Netherlands, Yatani’s lawyer said the government is responsible to show why his admission to the U.S. would be “prejudicial” to American interests.

Zoo Offers Cantonese, Tagalog Story Boxes
In recognition of the growing Chinese and Filipino populations among the Bay Area, the San Francisco Zoo finally added the languages of Cantonese and Tagalog in their story boxes. Previously only consisting of English and Spanish channels, these story boxes now allow a variety of non-English speakers to enjoy zoo tales.

S.F. Fire Chief Personally Appeals for Asian Recruits
Chief Frederick Postel made a special invitation to Asians to apply for firefighting positions. Bern Lee, who was one of the departments first eight Asians promoted to lieutenant said, “This is the first hiring since 1982 and I urge Asian men and women to take advantage of it.”
