Asian Groups Call for Hearings on Violence
Amid heightening concerns about inadequate government responses to violence against Asian Americans, a committee of Asian Americans called for congressional hearings to focus national attention on the issue. Without mechanisms to monitor cases, they say, the widespread nature of anti-Asian violence has gone unperceived by government authorities.

SFFD’s First Asian Woman Firefighter
Theresa Gee became the first Asian American woman firefighter for the SFFD and perhaps the only one in the nation at that time. Growing up in a city where their family was the only Asian one around, ?Gee is a role model for other Asians,? said SFFD recruit Lt. Bernie Lee.

Clinton Breaks Record for Appointing Asians
President Clinton allocated 3 percent of his administration to Asian Pacific Americans, making him the first among presidents to do so in U.S. history. Mirroring the then-current percentage of APAs in the total U.S. population, a Democratic National Committee spokesperson said, “Asian Pacific Americans are an important component to his spirit of inclusiveness and confidence in the emergence of new leadership.”
