What’s at Stake: Nov. 8’s State Ballot Propositions

Proposition 73 amends the California Constitution to ban abortions on minors until 48 hours after the teen’s parents have been notified.

Proposition 74 extends the probationary period for teachers from two to five years.

Proposition 75 requires public employee unions to ask permission from each employee every year before using union dues for political campaigns.

Proposition 76 gives the governor more authority over budget cuts under certain circumstances and changes minimum education spending guarantees.

Proposition 77 takes the authority of redistricting from the legislature and gives it to a three-member panel of retired judges.

Proposition 78 enables eligible Californians to purchase prescription drugs at reduced prices. Drug companies have the option of participating voluntarily.

Proposition 79 provides prescription drug discounts to eligible Californians, and creates an oversight board. It makes prescription drug profiteering illegal.

Proposition 80 repeals sections of 1996 electricity deregulation and requires electricity providers to get at least 20 percent of their supply from renewable resources by 2010.
