I <3 Uverworld

Like many rock bands from Japan, commonly known as J-rock, Uverworld has made itself known in the United States through their songs. “D-tecnoLife,” their adventurous and high-flying piece, is the second opening theme song for the widely loved anime Bleach, a story about a young man who sees spirits and becomes a Death God that kills souls that have turned into monsters.

Much of the mainstream U.S. rock music landscape is filled with the rather monotonous pop rock where the same sequence of notes is repeated more times than the mind can stand and, to make it worse, all the bands sound like each other. This is definitely not the case with Uverworld, where you’ll get a healthy serving of some pop melodies, plus heavy rock flavored with a dash of hip hop.

Using some well-known U.S. mainstream bands for comparison, Uverworld’s music is like a lighter version of Incubus. Their music is more progressive than your average droning pop rock band, but not as wild as System of a Down.

Anyone looking for some refreshing new sounds and getting a taste of today’s J-rock should pick up a copy of this band’s album. Most fans of the anime Bleach already have.
