Talk-Story about Senator Akaka

I agree that Hawai‘i residents must vote in this primary (“Here’s the Real Talk-Story,” Sept. 22). We must send Senator Akaka back to D.C. to keep our senior status in the U.S. Senate. Akaka works for the benefit of all, not just special interest groups.
Remember the story about the story of “Quiet Warrior.” He walks quietly, but carries a big stick. That’s our Senator Akaka. He gets the job done. Mahalo.

My experience meeting with Senator Akaka was the best when he offered to meet with me and provided me a first-class U.S. Capitol tour. It is a tremendous joy to have the only Chinese-Hawaiian American serving in the U.S. Senate representing the APA community. I hope Senator Akaka can serve to 100 years old or longer and break the senior record of service. He is the epitome of Hawai‘i’s aloha spirit.

Setting the Record Straight
I’ve been a subscriber of AsianWeek for over 25 years and enjoy your articles. There is an error in “N.J. APA Voters Flexing Political Muscle” (July 21). I have been a Workers’ Compensation Judge in New Jersey for over four years, before Governor Corzine was elected governor. So it’s incorrect to state that he appointed me. All Compensation Judges in N.J. are appointed by the governor. I was appointed by New Jersey Acting Governor Donald DeFrancesco in January 2002.

Race-Related?
Were the attacks race-related (“S.F. Attacks Haunt KoreAms,” Sept. 15)? I live in London, United Kingdom, and am not familiar with the ethnic composition of the areas, but would like to follow Asian and APA news as much as I can.

Passion And Security
I am starting med school and while I love playing piano and writing (“Me, Myself and I [And My Indian Parents],” Sept. 8), my passion has been medical science. I am of Indian origin, and while I realize the pressure some kids face to pursue a career in medicine, engineering or finance, I have pursued my passion as the writer has. It would be misleading to say that all doctors chose their profession because of financial security as it would be to say all actors and writers choose their professions for creative satisfaction.

From a Proud Mom
What a beautiful writer (“Me, Myself and I [And My Indian Parents],” Sept. 8)! Really enjoyed the article! By the way, I am her proud mom!
