Former S.F. Chronicle deputy managing editor Mi-Ai Parrish, now The Idaho Statesman publisher, in May 2002’s San Francisco magazine admitted the Chronicle “failed to tell the story of the Bay Area” by citing the story of Asian Pacific Americans, who make up 20 percent of the Bay Area. … The ignorance was affirmed with a growing coalition of KoreAms and Koreans overseas outraged at the daily’s racy “Diary of a Sex Slave.” Prior, the Chron interviewed in a San Francisco District 10 supervisor election story no APAs (33 percent of the voting age population), who are the largest group in the declining black (27 percent voting age) neighborhood. … ROLL OUT THE POLLS: San Jose Mercury News did something right. They polled Asian Americans in the San Jose mayor’s race, while CBS-5 TV still ignorantly commingles them in the “other” voter category when they makeup 30 percent of San Jose. … ASIANS BUOY REED: The Oct. 17 CBS-5 poll has Chuck Reed up by 13, with potential kingmaker Asian and other voters supporting him 58 percent – 33 percent. The Oct. 8 Mercury poll had APA voters supporting (44 percent – 36 percent) insurgent conservative Councilman Chuck Reed is helping give him a slight edge over Vice Mayor Cindy Chavez in a very tight 42 percent – 40 percent race.
ASIAN TIME: After Tempting Faith’s APA author David Kuo told all on 60 Minutes about the White House’s lip service to the Christian right, exotic dancer Kim Roberts told all as a key witness undermining the prosecution’s case in the Duke University lacrosse team rape. Kim’s hapa — Korean and black.
GAS GALS: Former Dem Party vice chair Mary Jung is joining buddy and ex-deputy mayoral spokesperson Darlene Chiu to keep our pilot lights on by working at PG&E. Jung was a ringleader in inserting voter registration cards in last week’s issue. … ‘CHINA’ FLOOD: David Lee’s Chinese American Voters Education Committee with only a few weeks to go before election day was flooded on Friday the 13th weekend. His Empress of China Grant Avenue office was drenched, waterlogging years of voter registration and education work and computer files. To donate, call (415) 397-8133.
CUSTER’S LAST STAND: Pundits are acknowledging that the House of Representatives will go democratic and Nancy Pelosi becomes the next speaker. But the GOP’s last stand may rest with S.F. Republican Party chair and challenger Mike DeNunzio’s long-shot bid to unseat Pelosi and prevent her from becoming speaker. Along for the ride with DeNunzio are Virginia Gee, president of the California Chinese American Republican Club, Rudy Ascercion of the National Asian American Republican Association, and Henry Kee, chairman of the California Chinese Republican Association.
QUEUED UP: Awaiting reappointment hearings at the Board of Supervisors are powerful Planning Commissioners Bill Lee and Chinese Historical Society of America’s Sue Lee — who is being appointed by the mayor, after the board of supervisors passed her up.
TREASURER APPOINTS TREASURER: Ex-S.F. Treasurer Susan Leal, now the Public Utilities Commission general manager, has anointed Joseph Yew as her finance director, or CFO. He’s the former assistant state treasurer to Matt Fong and treasurer of Oakland. He’s a rep, and she’s a bipartisan dem.
