A Fat New Year!
December 29, 2006
As the Year of the Pig approaches in 2007, one of California’s leading food families is getting ready for a Fat New Year. From its origins in the state Capitol, Sacramento’s Fat Family has established a dynasty of prominent and well-respected restaurateurs.
Chinese American Frank Fat first opened his restaurant in 1939, and 67 years later, 11 restaurants have opened up throughout the state, with locations in Sacramento, Roseville, Folsom, San Diego, Lincoln, Brooks and Alpine.
Though he passed away in 1997, his children and grandchildren have continued his legacy.
All of Frank and his wife Mary’s children: Wing, Jean, Ken, Tom, Mable, and Jerry (controller) have at one point helped out in the business whether it was as a hostess, waitress, dishwasher or busboy.
Currently, Tom Fat serves as the president of the corporation, while brother Ken is secretary and Jerry is controller.
Ken’s wife Lina is executive chef of Fat’s restaurants and his son Kevin is the director of operations for Frank Fat’s. Mable is the head of bookkeeping.
Wing is the vice president, and his son Collin is the director of operations.
Jean is a Board member, and granddaughter Kendyl Ong, 11, plans to continue the family tradition, and is aspiring for Lina’s position as executive chef.
“My father [Frank Fat] inspired me to treat everyone as you would like to be treated yourself, whether they are your family, friends, customers or employees,” said Jerry. “My parents set the foundation of our success. Without their hard work, perseverance and foresight, we would not be where we are today.”
