Keep the Heat On, Yvonne

I caught some of ABC’s The View, and I watched in horror as Rosie O’Donnell (”Racist Ring Around the Rosie Tightens,” Dec. 22) made a blatant racist joke about the Chinese language on the air. I wrote an angry e-mail to ABC, but I doubt they will do anything about it. I’m pretty sure it’s racist, and I was definitely offended.

If it isn’t bad enough Shaquille O’Neal and Adam Carolla also used those terms ignorantly, but to hear Rosie O’Donnell. We need to make her see that using “ching chong” to relate to the Chinese is the same as using the “N” word to relate to blacks. If it’s not now, it’s never.

Tears for James Kim

When I read “Honoring James Kim, Our High-Tech Tragic Hero” (Dec. 15) at the bus stop, it brought tears to my eyes. Although extremely sad and disheartened by the loss of James Kim, I had not shed a tear for him, preferring to focus on the rescue of his family. But your article really brought home the loss of such a wonderful, real (Asian) American hero.

I also have not been able to stop thinking about Mr. Kim and his family, though I had never heard of him prior to the unfortunate events earlier this month.

Screw the Anchors

I am an IT security specialist, and I couldn’t care less how many Asian anchormen (”Should AsianAm Men Be Angry?” Dec. 15) I see. To me, it’s just whiny complaints from some whitewashed Asians who won’t feel validated unless they see images of the likeness of themselves on TV.

We need even more substance than we have now. Screw the images, and screw those who see the world through images.

Terry Lee (”Should AsianAm Men Be Angry?” Dec. 15) disturbingly suggests that Asian American reporters must behave a certain way.

I am young and I’d like to think I’m a good-looking Asian American woman pursuing a career in journalism.

And if “white” means that I have a firm grasp on the English language, speak without an accent and of course, work hard to turn in well-written articles and scripts, then I’m guilty as charged.

Rah, Rah for Vicki!

An American resident tracing her roots in the Philippine soil! That’s indeed great to know. Another Philippine warm-blooded woman (”Park Named After Filipina Olympian,” Nov. 3) making it in the world record. She makes me add another feather in my cap!

More Women With Guns

First, I would like to thank you for printing a great story (”Gun-Toting Grandma,” Dec. 8) that should inspire many more women to compete in a shooting sport. Second, thank you, Vera Koo, for the support of the Action Pistol. Good luck in your future shooting.
