Tzi Gets No ZZZ’s; Yul Moves in on CNN

April 24, 2007

Richard Gere is a romancer and the Dalai Lama’s personal party boy, but Indians are burning effigies of the world’s sexiest actor for laying on too much PDA at last week’s AIDS-awareness stunt. Richard swept up Indian actress Shilpa Shetty off her feet onstage and kissed her several times. Within hours, orange miniatures of the American actor were burning bright and fierce. Shilpa wonders what’s the big deal? And wishes that lawyers and TV stations would focus on the real issue of unprotected sex and health care instead of clashing over a kiss.

MASI OKA: GEEK LOVE’S ICON FOR 20 YEARS

You think that Heroes lead Masi Oka would be used to women tossing their coke bottle glasses at him by now, but the humble Computer Science major turned actor is shocked by his fans. “I’m absolutely surprised when people tell me I’m sexy,” he told In Touch. “Last year, I could walk into Starbucks without showering and people wouldn’t look twice. Now I’ve got to make sure I’m well-groomed when I go out!” Masi first shared face time on the cover of TIME Magazine in 1987 as one of six “Asian American Whiz Kids.” He was only 12 years old—question is, how was his prom after that”

SLEEPLESS ON SATURDAY FOR TZI MA

It was a quiet Saturday night when I gave Tzi Ma a ring. “Girl, I haven’t slept in 36 hours,” he complained. The reason? A massive rager at Los Angeles’ Avalon club? Back-to-back charity functions and public appearances? No, Tzi’s been hard at work rehearsing for his season appearance in Fox’s 24 while also preparing for his upcoming role in David Henry Hwang’s production of Yellow. “We’ve been working non-stop on the set, and everyone’s pushing hard to wrap up filming [on 24] by the end of next month,” he said sleepily. Cinderella’s not the only one who had to ditch the glamour for some peace and quiet at the midnight hour!

YUL KWON NEWEST ADDITION TO THE CNN FAMILY

A world-famous mum and silver mop may not be enough to keep Anderson Cooper as CNN’s darling “weather boy” reporter when Survivor: Cook Island winner Yul Kwon moves in next month to present his segments highlighting Asian American politics and representation in the media and abroad. Yul and confidante Mark Young have been putting their heads together to come up with hard-hitting issues not being discussed in the mainstream media. Is there a future for a hard-hitting Asian American talk show? Tune in next month to find out.

GORILLAZ GOING SOLO AGAIN AFTER MOVIE

Trip-hop, digi-band Gorrillaz will be no more, says lead singer Damon Albarn, who also shares the stage with his ex-Blur bandmate Graham Coxton. “We’re trying to make a film next, starting in September [2007],” Damon told Female First UK. “But there won’t be another pop record.” It’s too bad—but looks like Noodle (aka former Cibo Matto singer Miho Hatori) took the lead early on and embarked on her American solo tour in November 2006. Miho recently appeared in San Francisco in February.
