Pollution Turns Taj Mahal Yellow
AGRA, India — Iconic 17th century mausoleum, Taj Mahal, is renowned for its shimmering white marble, but air pollution is causing it to be encrusted with granules of dirt and soot.
Treatment to clean up takes about two months, costs $230,000 and will need to be repeated every two or three years.
The Taj Mahal was built by the Mogul Emperor Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1654 for his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Read more

LOS ANGELES — The AZN Asian Excellence Awards, honoring Asian and APA achievements in arts and entertainment, rolled out the red carpet in front of UCLA’s Royce Hall this month to celebrities such as Rex Lee, Jason Scott Lee and Michelle Krusiec.
San Francisco’s comic sweetheart Margaret Cho looked around the sea of Asian faces and said, “I never see all the Asian actors because they usually have just one per show.” Read more
Highlander — Anime Style!

When the Wachowski brothers made The Animatrix, it was one of those great East meets West creative events that produced a brilliant series of classic anime shorts. Each had the unique flavor of the individual anime director blended beautifully with the Matrix universe that the brothers had created. One of those anime gurus, Yoshiaki Kawajiri, who worked on two of the eight shorts, is best known for his works Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D. On June 5th, Kawajiri will be introducing to U.S. audiences another brilliant East/West collaboration, Highlander: The Search for Vengeance. Read more

SAN JOSE — Asian Americans for Community Involvement celebrated its 34th anniversary honoring community heroes and leaders at its San Jose Marriott fundraiser last week.
San Jose Japanese Community Youth Service, along with Nalini Shekar and Dr. Samuel So were bestowed with Community Star Awards.
The parent-run Japanese Community Youth Service, founded in 1961, helps children develop skills in dance and sports. Read more

A primary health care clinic designed to provide high-quality and culturally competent care to members who prefer to receive health services in Asian languages, the Module has 13 bilingual Chinese physicians who are fluent in dialects such as Cantonese Chiuchow, Hakka, Mandarin, Shanghainese and Toishanese.
