Yao Goes With the Flow
May 25, 2007
The closest that normal mortals can get to viewing Yao Ming face-to-face is usually more like eyeball to bellybutton lint, but now the PMSing and the incontinent in China can literally sit on his face. Guandong businessman Xiao Senwen has registered Yao as a trademark for sanitary pads, according to China Daily, and rumor has it that girls can sit on a picture of his face.
SWEETHEARTS UNITED AT AXA 2007
Dancing With the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba was radiant in a lime green gown on the red carpet for May 16th AZN’s Asian Excellence Awards, but the presenter was ecstatic when she heard that she’d be presenting with her former high school sweetheart, Jason Scott Lee. “I never see him anymore you know,” she told me. “He lives on some island in Hawaii.” Good thing she’ll be in Oahu with boyfriend, Artem Chigvintsev, on May 29th. Jason has already sworn for a reunion already.
LOVE IN THE AIR FOR APOLO?
Carrie isn’t the only one who’s found love on the set of Dancing With the Stars. Looks like Olympic short track speedskating champ Apolo Anton Ohno is getting closer to dance partner, Julianne Hough, though the pair claim that they’re just like “brother and sister.” Fans screamed at UCLA’s Royce Hall as the pair breezed by quickly as a cha cha, hand in hand. No sibling rivalry there, indeed.
JUSTIN CHON CHANNELS SCISSORHANDS
“I did the best I could do, and just put whatever crap I could in it,” smiled cheeky Korean American newcomer Justin Chon, who stars with Sean Penn and Harrison Ford in Crossing Over this month. But the baby-faced actor didn’t even get to work face-to-face with Harrison! No matter, Justin says his fave actor is Johnny Depp because “he’s not scared of anything. He’s got balls for the roles he takes.” That would explain the glam rock do!
WILL YUN LEE: ROOSEVELT ALUM
Will Yun Lee is handsome, urbane and local. The Roosevelt Middle School alum recalled his early San Francisco days over cocktails and reminisced about the Richmond district till the wee hours. “I just flew in from New York City today,” he yawned. “It’s actually three o’clock for me.” He should be available to actually see the city now that his TV show, Bionic Woman, will be airing Wednesday nights on NBC.
THE APPRENTICE VERSUS THE MAN
Korean American entrepreneur James Sun was fired from The Apprentice, and some speculate he only did the show to promote his Web 2.0 company, Zoodango, to non-tech geeks. But the ousted reality TV star isn’t holding any grudges against Donald. “He eats cheeseburgers and oreos. He’s a simple man, but complex with his business,” he told me, chuckling that “He’s just like us… except he has millions of dollars.” James will be premiering his online TV show, Edgucated, on Zoodango in August.
