Who Wants Some Tequila?

DICK HO DOES APATURE
Ladies, it’s high time you got Lei’d — Jeff Lei’d, that is. Dick Ho himself, director/actor Jeff Lei presented himself at Kearny Street Workshop’s annual arts fest on Sept. 27. But that’s not the only place where you’ll catch a glimpse of the idiosyncratic SF native. He’s also an extra in the hilarious ping-pong spoof Balls of Fury.
MASI OKA LEARNS JAPANESE ON SET … WELL, JUST ENGRISH
Masi Oka was voted one of America’s upcoming whiz kids only to become an actor on NBC’s biggest money-maker Heroes. And now, the time-traveling supernerd will be going back to 17th century Japan to meet an English samurai? Masi had to be instructed on how to speak Japanese with a special dialogue coach for this season’s time-traveling fanfare—though producers joked on the set that there wasn’t much to it other than faking some hefty Engrish.
BAI LING AT STYLE AWARDS AIDS CONFUSION
It wasn’t exactly an “I’m With Stupid” tee, but Bai Ling once again astounded the world by showing up at the Maxim Style Awards in Los Angeles dressed like a cheap Thai transsexual in cutoff denim shorts, leggings, two-tone hair and a midriff tee with the words “This Girl” above an arrow pointing down to a photo of herself. Perhaps the slogan was pointing more towards her hot pants — or referring to the fact that she hasn’t made a decent movie since Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith last year. But, then again, Lucas Films allegedly cut her scenes because of her Playboy spread.
AND WHERE WERE YOU?
• Nancy Whang of LCD Soundsystem bringing down the house at the Shoreline Amphitheater as the opening act for the Arcade Fire.
• CoCo Lee, the Chinese Madonna, lived up to her namesake on Sept. 23, with her first U.S. performance since becoming the pan-Asian face of Chanel in 2004. Lee (born Ferren Lee-Kelly) grew up in San Francisco.
VHS OR BETA BRING DOWN HOUSE
Yes, Virginia, there are Asian people in Louisville, Ky., and they rock. Even Blender magazine has noticed, calling VHS or Beta one of the best new rock bands. But more flattering was when Asian faces filled the floor at the Mezzanine on Sept. 14. Singer and guitarist Craig Pfunder never thought he’d go from punk to disco king. “In our city … everyone was kind of bored,” he told Recoil Magazine. “I was sick of being bored. I like to go out and have fun … and we wanted to give people the excuse to do that.” Craig does assert that he’s “sick of seeing Nickelback” and that “bands like that just need to disappear.”
TILA MAKES LIQUOR AND DATING FUN AGAIN
What happens when you take MTV, add self-made cyberceleb Tila Tequila (née Tila Nguyen), and a handful of sexually confused and fame-hungry wannabe actors? A Shot at Love With Tila Tequila, which airs October 9 at 10 p.m. PST. The bisexual bachelorette is an ex-gang member. “I was really confused then,” she told Import Tuner, “because at first I thought I was black, then I thought I was Hispanic and joined a cholo gang.” Soon after that, a Playboy scout found her at — where else? — the mall.
